  • Exploring The Georgia Aquarium

The Georgia Aquarium is a world class attraction in downtown Atlanta. The facility, which opened in 2005, is the world's largest aquarium. Its 8 million gallons of fresh and sea water are home to a wide variety of aquatic life. In addition to being a top-notch attraction, one of its major goals is to be a leading aquatic animal conservation and research facility. It is the only integration of a veterinary teaching hospital and an aquarium.

The Georgia Aquarium contains five permanent galleries for visitors to explore. In Cold Water Quest visitors will observe fish, marine mammals, and birds that live in the world's cold ocean waters. The exhibit contains harbor seals, sea otters, African penguins, and the giant Pacific octopus. The Beluga whale exhibit welcomed a new young male and female pair in November. The Ocean Voyager gallery was designed to house whale sharks, the largest fish species in the world. Visitors walk through an acrylic tunnel to view sting rays, hammerhead sharks, and four giant manta rays, the only ones in a U.S. aquarium. The Tropical Diver gallery showcases sea creatures that live in tropical coral reefs. There are living coral, colorful tropical fish, sea horses, and jellyfish. The River Scout area presents a diverse selection of animals that live in the world's rivers. Visitors will be able to see piranha, Asian small-clawed otters, and American albino alligators. The Georgia Explorer gallery is an interactive area with touch pools, where visitors may feel horseshoe crabs and sting rays. The exhibit features loggerhead sea turtles that the aquarium rehabilitates and releases back into their natural habitats.

The aquarium also presents special exhibits. The current one is Planet Shark: Predator or Prey, which runs through February 20. There is a separate admission for the special exhibits.

The Georgia Aquarium is located in downtown Atlanta at 225 Baker Street NW, across from Centennial Olympic Park. A parking garage is adjacent to the aquarium. The aquarium is open 365 day a year. Hours are Sunday-Friday from 10am-5pm and Saturday from 9am-6pm, with occasional extended hours. In addition to the regular exhibits, the aquarium offers Behind the Scenes Tours for visitors age 10 and older. There is also a 4-D theater with multiple shows each day. Caf?? Aquaria serves lunch and snacks, and there are two gift shops which sells a variety of aquarium-themed merchandise. Visitors to Atlanta are sure to enjoy this popular attraction.
